MONTHLY UPDATE - AUGUST 2008
Hypnosis Hypnotherapy Convention 2008
We have just returned from the largest hypnosis conference in the world held in Marlborough, Massachuetts. It is quite a shock to go to this, and I always find it similar to going to a Galleria with the feeling of “where do I start”?
Dr. Martin gave two talks with satisfied audiences at the end of his talks. His first talk was on “Sleep Like a Baby With Hypnosis” and the second talk was on “ Reversing or Stopping the Aging Process using the Subconscious Mind”. We also have Cd’s on both topics so you can work on these issues at home .
We always encounter people at these conventions who tell their wonderful stories of success with their CD’s they have bought in the past. We also have nice encounters after the seminars. The first seminar was a large seminar. In this seminar, Dr. Martin does a group session of hypnosis to assist through the subconscious in balancing the endocrine system as part of the topic. This system has to be in balance for the body to work and sleep properly.
After that talk we heard over and over from both men and women, “Your voice is so relaxing. I have been relaxed and at peace after that session.” Another man came up to us the next day and stated that he had had a true problem with sleep. He had slept wonderfully after that session and in a hotel room no less. The miraculous part was that he has been overcoming shingles slowly with recurrences and setbacks. After that session in a group, he woke up the next morning with no more shingles. He was relaxed, no longer sleep deprived, and experiencing the conference without the irritation of remaining shingle lesions.
The Power Of the Hypnotic Voice
It was wonderful to return home to an email from another hypnotist on the power of the voice. His write up is available for you to click and read. The summary of this is that the training and use of the voice is just as powerful in a hypnosis session as the actual words. He goes on to say that the professional use of the voice is becoming a lost art. He uses two deceased and famous hypnotists as examples of excellent hypnotists who developed their ability to use their enunciation with voice tone to assist people with deep states of hypnosis. These two mentioned were Dave Ellman and Ormond McGill. Dr. McGill was one of Dr. Martin’s mentors and since his death at age 92, looking 72 when he died, he has been very missed .

Ed Martin and Dr. Ormond McGill at the last convention before his death.
We saw Carol Denicker of Northshore Hypnosis in New York. She teaches a wonderful class on proper use of a website. It was Carol who stated in her class as she was being taped that “Ed Martin is one hypnotist who needs to have his voice example on his website.” “He has one of the best voices in the field now.” She had mentioned this in her classes more than once, and after last year, Ed Martins voice is now on our website.
I think the email coming in on this date about the voice of a hypnotist was a “sign” that Dr. McGill knows we met with his friend Chuck Mignosa (who was his stage hypnosis and magic partner for years up until Dr. McGill’s death). Chuck told “Ormond Stories” at the convention. We were all sitting on a comfortable sofa in front of a waterfall telling “Ormond” stories. It was an experience we will remember always.
At this convention we bought two newly published books written by Dr. McGill, and I had read one (his autobiography) the first night of the convention. (I took a speed reading course in college and a book a night can get expensive).
Unreleased Issues and their Impact on life
Since I am a trained Family of Origin Therapist, I noticed that Ormond had pictures of his father, grandfather, himself, etc., but no picture of his mother . He mentioned once in the book that she saved his life with a flaxseed bandage when traditional medicine couldn’t save his hand from a bite from a monkey at a county fair as a child, but no pictures of her were in the book.
His mother was very absent in the telling of his life except for the flaxseed story. I carefully broached this with Chuck and he looked amazed that I caught that saying: “his parents divorced while he was in college”. His implication was that this divorce had quite an impact, and I think we can guess who got the blame for it. It brought to mind a good friend of mine who was taken to Auburn University by his parents. He was an excellent high school student with an aspiration to be an architect. Even though he is now an architect with buildings in several states and a successful subdivision of custom homes, the fact that his parents divorced shortly after taking him to Auburn University literally stalemated his life for many years. He finally regrouped and became successful.
He has for several years now fought head and neck cancer . He is too busy for hypnosis (he says) and lives in another locale. I always have thought that his grief, shock, hurt, and repressed feelings severely impacted his life from the day he learned his parents only stayed together to get him to college. Also, his older brother and sister were killed as young adults in a car accident and his father always blamed his mother as he grew up.
The subconscious is just like a VCR tape or DVD of our life. Unless a releasing takes place on a subconscious level then, like the man with his reoccurrences of shingles, we trigger back to events that impact health and emotional well-being. The General Cellular Releasing CD of Causes is a powerful releasing tool to assist the subconscious in letting go of causes.
Voice assists in Releasing Causes
However, you have to access the subconscious mind and many hypnotists with sing-song cadences, poor voice quality, and poor rapport just can’t get people to a deep level of hypnosis.
The day we got on the plane there was a newspaper article about a former Alabama football coach being hired to do announcing for a TV program produced by The University of Alabama. The article was protesting it because his voice is of poor tone and very grating (according to the sports reporter). The sports reporter found it unbelievable that he would be hired with his voice tone.
I think I have mentioned before that little Brayden Harrington would smile as a baby when he heard two voices: Peter Jennings or Ed Martin. The sound of either of their voices would bring a smile to his face before he could even speak words or express himself.
Visit to Walden Pond
As a former English teacher when a very young woman, I was drawn this time on the convention trip to Walden Pond. We made an excursion to Concord, Massachuetts, to Ralph Waldo Emerson’s land and pond where Thoreau took a respite to regroup and become more creative. The land and Walden pond are breath- taking (it is more like a huge lake than a pond) . Going back in time came from overhearing someone mention Walden Pond . We went dressed as we were and had some friendly statements made about our bathing suits which were convention clothes for giving a seminar. Our response: “When opportunity presents itself follow your GPS because you may never have that opportunity again!”

Art is a tool for subconscious communication
I feel like the next part of this month’s communication is being mused by Emerson and Thoreau. (ha) We were contacted by a person who wanted to support the creative teachings we do and asked that the time and effort put into the creative part of our update be continued. This person had noticed a stalemate in some of the more artistic parts of our website. So this next scenario is some previously promised information.
It also appears to be a trend needed in the world today. Examples of this are: two recent articles in the Birmingham News. One was a follow-up story about a man who is now at Bryce Mental Hospital in Tuscaloosa. He is 102 years old. He has been institutionalized since he was in his 50’s. He does artwork daily and has since he has been institutionalized. His health is excellent. He is also very happy. His story appears to be one of a man who became institutionalized perhaps because of poverty, no education, and a hard life. He transcended that adversity, under horrendous conditions at first, through art.
It has also been found that his folk art has a mathematical component to it which is found interesting. The Executive Director of Bryce Hospital and one of his therapists have arranged a showing of his art in another state. This will be his first trip out of Alabama ever. The article clearly states that his good health is attributed to his finding and nurturing his art. His work was sold for almost nothing for years in order to buy more supplies. It is felt now that his art work is priceless and will only be sold to collectors. It is interesting that his colors are almost exclusively Red and Blue. These colors are parental issues in art therapy or issues relating to authority. Usually, it relates to situations with the family of origin, however.

Shortly after that article came out another tells of the Gees Bend quilts that have gone around the country for display. Because these quilts, which were quilted in an isolated area of Alabama, have such strong positive impact on mankind, a grant has been obtained to hire an artist to do a replica train leading tourists into the Gees Bend area to view some of the quilts .

Later in the month, kindergarten children in Birmingham, were in the newspaper showing them in high chefs hats stirring eggs as a group. They were hearing and experiencing Humpty Dumpty is a new way. They were seeing the results of some of Humpty Dumpty’s choices in life by hearing the story and creating an egg recipe from the story. The article stated the experience with the rhyme stimulated their creativity. It certainly was a cute picture .

Next, all in the same month, there was a story about Jane Seymour in the Sky Magazine on the airplane. In it she tells of going through what she calls the Dark, Bleak Times. Her father died, she lost her home , went through health issues, and a dry spell in her creative TV and movie work during these times. She found her survival link through the subconscious mind and art. She now makes a substantial part of her living through the art she does which is replicated in sheets, paintings , and other home decorations which others reverberate to on a higher level.
So, art is a work of our subconscious and higher mind. The conscious mind enjoys the visual effects. Since the conscious cannot decipher the meaning, it is a dimension of the subconscious. It is authentic in terms of feelings and it has been found that through creation of art, negative feelings are released.
Let’s now move to a music explanation of why we want to develop both our right brains and our left brains to experience life fully. Click here to hear and understand.
Super Star Client Triumphs Again
With the permission of a client of mine who came several years ago and then returned for a jumpstart session on a holiday day for me, I will show how the language of art can speak volumes. Shaun’s story is being put on the tree drawing page and the Super Star page. Shaun Sparacio is a successful researcher in Birmingham. She had been in her job successfully for approximately twenty years when we met. She came because she participated in triathlons very successfully. However, in the swimming competition there is a technique which must be followed. Shaun could finish and finish within a good time. She could not, however, put her head down in the way she was supposed to do in this swimming.
She drew a tree in the pre-talk part of her session which spoke volumes .

This tree shows her to be a very generous person who spent her thinking time subconsciously torn in three directions. She also is very goal-oriented with a good mind-body connection. She would openly discuss the past if we were doing talk therapy (which we were not). I saw then that she was sprouting a positive transformation. The main problem I saw was that all her life force was literally being sucked from her by the outside world. In other words, all her creativity was literally being drained from other by others and her allowing others to do this.
We did the releasing of causes for her Super Star session, and it was found to have an origin at age four . It was a grief experience from falling into a pond at age four and wearing “boy clothes” for the rest of the day. Also, there were other losses that had occurred in life to build on this . Her motto was always “look up” “keep moving” and “don’t rehash” the losses. Needless to say, being very bright and very goal-oriented, she was able to master the proper procedure for her triathlon by releasing and reprogramming the subconscious.
It was her first experience with “crayons since grammar school” and with hypnosis. . Our follow-up on the Super Star session some years ago had actually been on self love and setting boundaries with others to assist her life.
I was amazed to see her Second tree drawing.

This tree was drawn after years have gone by, and she did not remember the dynamics of her first tree. She had “been nervous” at the first session. Anyway, she drew another tree. This time the tree had two directions only. She was heavy into the transformation now and the vining was gone!
This meant that the “sucking off her life force” was literally being transformed. Also, the reason she came was: getting past the two directions. Her husband had already left for another major city. She remained to sell their home. It was a lovely home in a beautiful section of Birmingham was no viewers coming to see the house. She was here and he was there in another city.
We worked with her subconscious and some amazing things came to her mind: there were several components holding her subconsciously with only one being worry over her elderly pet and his transition to an apartment until they could find a house in the new move city. This was all subconscious and had not been a conscious thought. Also, there were dynamics of “abandoning others” on her job where she had been for so many years and the possible fear of moving “her element”. She had literally stopped driving a Porsche after our first session and bought her an Element car with people now saying “Shaun is in her Element.” She felt with a move she would either return to research and the isolation of it or move into other talents she had developed over the years. Moving time would bring all of this to the forefront.
End result:
I sent her an email link about mentioning her in another blog. Her email went through to her personal computer. However, the job she had felt she could not leave gave a contact person because “ She had moved on”. She had freed herself through the power of her mind and was no longer stalemated. She is definitely finding her element in the next stage of her life. Her tree was a clear blueprint for me to see. Because of the art work I understood clearly what the main problem was and also saw the positive effects of the releasing, reprogramming, and positive suggestion. God’s Speed, Shaun.
Understanding CoDependency
Co-dependency continues to be a subject that many have fallen into. We have heard over the last month more talk presented as euphemisms about how to broach others in life. There was one powerful talk at the convention about the dangers of co-dependency also. I will again venture into the language of co-dependency.
Co-dependency is learned behavior. In an addictive family system it is always present with the co-dependent being in extreme danger of health decline, becoming over weight, and being unhappy in life. There is also a language that co-dependents speak. Control is always an issue, mixed communication which is called schizophrenic communication is almost always practiced, and lack of boundaries with no respect for others boundaries is almost always part of the process. For those trained in the dynamics of working with addictive family systems, this language stands out like a beacon. For others, it is just confusing communication.
Co-dependency is a progressive disease and unless new programming with new behavior takes place, the co-dependent will not survive. However, others in the system will generally have very negative feelings about the co-dependent and about whether they actually want them to survive. It is that harsh in its dynamics.
Some examples of co-dependent behavior we observed recently:
1. Codependent Behavior Example: Mixed communications.
Giving a severe reprimand and then actually stroking the behavior the reprimand for which the reprimand was given. This happened in the same event. This is called in therapy: “I hit you hard”…then “Come to me for nurturance”. The message of this communication is: “Let me control and you will survive.”
It is all about control and lack of intimacy with lack of respect for other’s boundaries.
2. Example two: “Everyone is entitled to their opinion.”
This is programmed information learned in an additive family system. The person saying this was saying it in response to someone expressing feelings that the continuous critical comments made for control were not appreciated. The person dealing with the continuous critical comments had shown that they would not follow through to the criticism, but they had not yet taken the response to the next level of saying “your comments are not appreciated or taken seriously, so stop them.”
The person was hoping at some point the critical person would see that their critical responses were falling on deaf ears. Unfortunately, ears literally become deaf when this response is taken over too long a period of time. The subconscious knows they are not defending their boundary and are not being authentic to themselves or their feelings. For this reason, people can actually somatize emotion into physical symptoms.
A good healthy attitude towards that comment: “Everyone is entitled to their opinion” is to know that:
Yes, they may be entitled, but they can only express it with the knowledge that others may choose to set a boundary and respond: “No, I do not agree and will not follow through with your desires.”
Then the critical person can go away and leave the boundary space that they are trying to invade, taking the opinion, to which they are entitled, with them in the process.
This is good boundary setting.
3. Example three: Invalidation of feelings.
A term in therapy connected to co-dependent behavior is called “playing devil’s advocate.” What this means is there is never any validation that someone understands feelings being presented to them. They will take the “devil ‘s advocate stance” for this invalidation. It is also called the “back-hand slap.” An example we heard recently: “I understand you are having a hard time, but you have help.” It is the martyr stance of “no one’s pain can ever reach the level of mine.”
4. Example four: Say what you mean to set boundaries
A fourth one we heard recently in conversation was: (from one adult to another) “You can now say thank you.” The healthy response in boundary issues would be:
“I went and bought you a bottle of water. I would like to be thanked for this effort.”
When we heard this, I thought: “I wonder if this person considers what the other person does for them?” However, it was in a crowd of strangers and who knows their story? I do know that the person receiving the bottle of water certainly looked sad from this comment.
One of the strongest tools for working on communication, intimacy, control issues, and boundary setting is to read some books on co-dependency and do hypnosis work to release each of these tendencies or co-dependency itself (the subconscious will know if it has to be done in increments or as a component called co-dependency. The Stop Addiction program we have on CDs might be a set you would want to explore.
Also, don’t forget we have a new CD series called "Sleep Like a Baby" and Cut some ZZZ’s.
We will close with a miraculous video (click to download this powerpoint video) of another time . The music with it is very soothing and just viewing might help any with fear of heights.
Also, if any just need a lift, please click to this and click a flower for a Divine Message. The music is also very soothing.
Here’s hoping you are leading a wonder-filled life,
Cheryl Martin
